Artist's Comments

I started sketching in Artrage and before I knew it this popped out. Yes, it's an anime thing again. And, it's wholly in Artrage. But sometimes you have to experiment and force yourself to work to break out of the ol' artist's block.

Before the crits start leaping, let me say that yes I know that the perspective and lines are a bit off. (AR's ability to do straight lines isn't necessarily the best. I can't wait for the newer version of the program later this year.)

And, don't worry guys I'll be catching up with my mail, deviations and fav's over the next 36 hours.

It's pretty good, and doesn't look particularly anime to me (which is a good thing =P ). I think it looks nicely stylized, without being derivative of any one style.

What stands out to me though is the hair. Usually your hair is amazing and detailed with great lighting, but in this case it's very flat. Also, her breasts are very large, but much too round. Unless they're tacked on her chest, there should be some sagging.

Still, I like it, especially how the relatively simple shapes of the background managed to create a fairly detailed image and yet draw your eye to the girl.

LOL.

As usual you're right -- and incredibly perceptive. I agree particularly about the hair. I was perhaps studying a little too much of the anime stuff when I was doing it. Hence, the more 2d feel. As for the chest, you're also right -- but here I resisted the temptation to follow what I know about basic anatomy and physics, and lean more towards the exaggerated "feel" one gets in the anime genre. All in all it was experiment in a style which I was not entirely familiar with and I wasn't unhappy with the final outcome.

Will I experiment with anime/manga again? Maybe, even though it isn't my usual cup of tea. But I have to finish some animal dissection diagrams for work first. Eww! :fear:

That makes sense about the breasts, they are often the most cartoonish part. =P But the hair, at least what I've seen of anime style drawings, tends to be very vibrant. Not necessarily detailed, but with lots of highlighting so it really stands out.

You're right. I think I'll revisit the drawing later this week and see what I can do about it.
